Lyon's Bench Wins the Tie as Dumornay, Egurrola and Chawinga Break Wolfsburg in Extra Time

It took 120 minutes, but OL Lyonnes' quality eventually told. Three substitute goals in the second half of extra time ended a brave Wolfsburg resistance and sent the eight-time champions to the semi-finals.

Wolfsburg held Lyon for 90 minutes at the Groupama Stadium, just as they had in Germany the week before. Then the bench came on, the corners kept coming, and the relentless weight of Lyon's depth finally wore the Germans down.

Ninety Minutes of Tension, Then a Flood

Going into Thursday night, the tie had a peculiar symmetry. Wolfsburg had won 1-0 in Germany a week earlier thanks to a Lineth Beerensteyn shot that deflected in off Damaris Egurrola. Now Lyon needed at least a one-goal win to survive. They got it within 16 minutes — and in almost identical fashion.

Lily Yohannes, the 18-year-old American midfielder who joined Lyon from Ajax last July, struck a low shot from distance that deflected in off Wolfsburg captain Janina Minge. One-nil on the night, 1-1 on aggregate, the tie perfectly balanced. The Groupama Stadium came alive.

From that point, Lyon poured forward with everything they had. Stina Johannes was outstanding in the Wolfsburg goal, making save after save to keep her side level. Selma Bacha struck a powerful free-kick that Johannes pushed around the post. Vicki Bècho arrived at the back post from a Tabitha Chawinga cross with the goal at her mercy and lifted the ball over the bar. Ada Hegerberg, one goal shy of becoming the first player to reach 70 in UEFA women's club competition, was denied twice by Johannes at close range. The stats at full time were staggering: Lyon had 29 attempts to Wolfsburg's three, with nine shots on target to the Germans' two. Yet it was 1-0 and the tie was level. Extra time awaited.

Giráldez's Bench Changes Everything

Jonatan Giráldez had been shuffling his deck throughout the 90 minutes, and the interventions that mattered most came in extra time. Melchie Dumornay, introduced as a substitute, pounced on a Johannes mistake from a corner in the 102nd minute — the goalkeeper failing to claim the delivery, and Dumornay tapping in from a metre out. Two minutes later, Egurrola made amends for the deflection that had gifted Wolfsburg their first-leg goal, heading in from another Bacha set-piece delivery with a precise guided effort into the left corner. Two goals in four minutes at the end of the first period of extra time. Lyon 3-0 Wolfsburg, 4-1 on aggregate. The tie was done.

Wolfsburg, who had shown tremendous spirit and organisation throughout and had held Lyon to just one goal across nearly 100 minutes of the tie, had nothing left in the tank to chase the game. Chawinga, who had come on in the 69th minute and spent most of the evening terrorising tired defenders with her directness and pace, completed the scoring in the 119th minute with a composed solo run, rounding Johannes before finishing into an empty net. Dignified in defeat, Wolfsburg had taken Lyon far deeper into this tie than most expected.

What This Night Said About Lyon

The scoreline — 4-0 on the night, 4-1 on aggregate — flatters Lyon slightly. For large stretches of this tie, Wolfsburg matched them. Stina Johannes alone made 10 saves across 120 minutes. Lyon had 37 attempts and 19 corners on the night. That ratio tells a story about how deeply difficult it was to break the Germans down, and about the quality that Giráldez's side eventually produced from their squad depth.

The night belonged to the substitutes as much as anyone. Dumornay, Egurrola and Chawinga all scored or assisted in extra time. It was the Malawian forward Chawinga who had 14 touches in the opposition box — more than any other Lyon player — despite starting on the bench. This is what Lyon's bench looks like when the pressure builds. It is a formidable resource, and it will need to be in the semi-finals, where the holders Arsenal await in what will be a repeat of last season's last-four meeting.
